Uses :

Pigments, ceramic enamels, aniline colours, decolourising agent in glass, insecticide, rodenticide, herbicide, sheep and cattle dip, hide preservative, wood preservative, preparation of other arsenic compounds.

2. HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION


2.1 Health Effects - Acute

Swallowed

Ingestion is harmful and may be fatal. Ingestion may cause nausea, vomiting, paralysis. May also cause gastrointestinal irritation.

Eye

Contact with eyes may cause irritation.

Skin

Contact with skin may cause irritation.

Inhaled

Inhalation of vapours may cause headache, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, drowsiness, irritation of respiratory tract, and loss of consciousness.

2.2 Health Effects - Chronic

Target organs are liver, kidneys, skin, lungs, lymphatic system. Routes of entry are inhalation, absorption, eye contact, skin contact, or ingestion.

2.3 First Aid

Swallowed

If swallowed and only if patient is conscious - induce vomiting. Seek immediate medical attention.

Eye

Wash eyes thoroughly with plenty of running water for at least 15 minutes, holding eyelids open. Seek medical attention.

Skin

Wash affected areas thoroughly with copious amounts of soap and water for at least 15 minutes. Seek medical attention.

Inhaled

If inhaled, remove to fresh air. If not breathing give artificial respiration. If breathing is difficult give oxygen. Seek immediate medical attention.

First Aid Facilities

Ensure an eye bath and safety shower are available and ready for use.

Treat symptomatically based on judgement of doctor and individual reactions of patient.

3. PRECAUTIONS FOR USE


3.1 Exposure Standards

Arsenic trioxide production, as As (*) = no limit established by Worksafe . Carcinogen Category 1 - established human carcinogen. (*) For a few substances, usually the more potent probable and established human carcinogens, it is not currently possible to assign an appropriate exposure standard. For these substances, exposure should be controlled to the lowest practicable level.

3.2 Engineering Controls

Use general or local exhaust ventilation to control exposure to a minimum.

3.3 Personal Protection

Respiratory - none required where adequate ventilation conditions exist, however it is recommended. If airborne concentration exceeds acceptable levels a dust/mist respirator is recommended. If concentration exceeds capacity of respirator, a self-contained breathing apparatus is advised. Eye/Skin - safety goggles, uniform/overalls, apron, proper gloves are recommended. Other - wear adequate protective clothing to minimise exposure to product at all times. Wash hands and face thoroughly after handling and before work breaks, eating, drinking, smoking or using toilet facilities. Avoid raising dust.

3.4 Flammability

Material is not flammable.

Keep containers tightly closed. Store in a secure poison area. Store or transport in accordance with all applicable regulations regarding Class 6.1 Dangerous Goods.

4.3 Spills and Disposal

Spills

Avoid raising dust. Clean up personnel should wear full protective clothing including self-contained breathing apparatus. DO NOT allow product to enter drains or waterways without pretreatment.

Disposal

Dispose of in accordance with all Local, State and Federal regulations at an approved waste disposal facility.

4.4 FIRE AND EXPLOSION HAZARD

Fire / Explosion

Material sublimes on heating. Material is stable under normal conditions of use and temperatures. Hazardous polymerisation will not occur. Incompatible with strong oxidising agents, chemically active metals and aluminium.

Extinguishing Media

Use media/equipment appropriate to surrounding fire conditions. Fire-fighters should wear full protective clothing including self-contained breathing apparatus.
